The Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies and the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies have published the 37th issue (Summer 2021) of its quarterly peer-reviewed journal Omran, dedicated to the social sciences. This edition contains the following studies: “The Arab State: A Historical Sociology Approach” by Adham Saouli & Raymond Hinnebusch; “State and Hegemony over Society: The Corporatist Authoritarian State and the Restrictions of Democratic Transition in Algeria” by Abdelkader Abelali; “Transformations of the Welfare State in Algeria: Social Policies on the Line of Economic and Development Crises” by Hami Hacene; “Bottom-up Urbanism and the Culture of Squatting: A Critical Assessment” by Nezar Alsayyad; “The Impact of Feminist Epistemology on the Production and Understanding of Sociological Knowledge in the Arab Region” by Rachid Benbih.
Featured in the Translation Section is Yassine Yassni & Wadia Jehouani's Arabic rendition of Elsa Dorlin “The Epistemological and Political Use of “Sex” and “Race” Categories in Gender Studies”. Two book reviews are also featured in Omran 37 including: Rachid Jarmouni's review of The New Jihad in the West by Farhad Khosrokhavar; and Mohamed Naimi's review of North Africa after the Arab Uprisings by Luis Martinez.
